Furthermore, it also shows how the U.S.’s ideal of the ‘land of the free’ is also ironically not one that is free – but is based on the venture of capitalism. The Behrani family is viewed with contempt and even fear from Kathy, who views their traditions and sudden transformation over her ‘All-American’ property as almost sub-human and alien-like. The story also highlights some important issues the treatment of those marginalised in society, the gulf between two vastly different cultures and sense of belonging. At one point, there is a shift in the mood of story which may surprise viewers – but on the whole, this is a subtle and heart-wrenching journey. The narrative displays the paralells between the two leads, building up the claustrophobic atmosphere like a pressure cooker, ready to explode at any time. ![]() ![]() House of Sand and Fog is an insightful and emotional film based on Andre Dubus III’s novel of the same name. It is this emerging pathos that literally spills over for Kathy and Behrani neither side will ever forget the tragedy which unfolds before them. This leads to the main crux of the film’s apparent dilemma should someone be given a second chance to make amends and regain back their property or should an individual from another country be allowed to sell the house that they have legally bought with their own money to gain a substantial profit? As Kathy and Behrani clash over the rights to the house, unconsciously it is a battle of colliding cultures, a desire to fit in and also a desire to retain onto one’s own identity. After all, her father spent thirty long years paying off the mortgage of the house only for the rights to be thrown away on one unopened letter. However, Kathy is adamant that the property is still hers – despite the legal ruling. When he sees the Nicolo property up for sale at auction, he immediately snaps it up to resell for twice the price later. ![]() Meanwhile, Colonel Behrani (Ben Kingsley), a proud Iranian immigrant to the U.S., has worked years in two meager jobs to be able to save up for a standard of life he feels his family is entitled to. One fateful day, the state police issue an order for her to be evicted from her beloved coastline home for negligence of unpaid taxes. The house is all she has along with the memories of her father’s legacy. Within eight months, depression sets in for Kathy her husband has left her, the bills are piling up and much to her family’s half hearted attempts to reach out to her – she feels utterly alone and helpless. Kathy is a recovering drug addict who inherits her current bungalow home from her recently deceased father along with her brother who lives further away. For Kathy Nicolo (Jennifer Connelly), it is a combination of both hope and despair. In the House of Sand and Fog, when two individuals clash over the rights to a house – both parties get more than what they ever bargained for.Ī house can represent many different things to people dreams, hope, security but also fear, isolation and despair. It is owned by somebody else the previously familiar home has transformed into something strangely less reminiscent – the associated memories of the time living in the house fading into the thickness of the fog, forever.
